Orcinus orca (Linnaeus, 1758)
The largest member of the dolphin family and a top predator in every ocean — a single species that behaves almost like several, split into populations with their own diets, calls and hunting cultures.
Why the orca is extraordinary
It shapes food webs from the top down.
As an ocean apex predator, the orca is associated with regulating populations of prey such as seals and fish. In many systems that top-down pressure is linked to the structure and balance of the marine community below it.
There is no single "orca".
Distinct ecotypes — fish-eating Residents, mammal-hunting Bigg's/Transients, Offshores, and several Antarctic types — differ in diet, dialect and behaviour, often without interbreeding. A claim true for one population can be false for another, so context has to travel with every statement.
It is a sentinel for ocean health.
As a long-lived predator at the top of the chain, the orca concentrates what the ocean carries — from prey abundance to persistent pollutants. Its condition is often read as a signal of the wider system's state.
What is known
The orca is the largest member of the dolphin family (Delphinidae) — a toothed whale, despite the name "killer whale".
Adults commonly reach 6–8 m; large males can approach ~9 m.
Limitation · Ranges are typical adult figures; individuals and populations vary.
Females often live 50–80+ years; males typically shorter. Post-reproductive females are known to lead pods.
Limitation · Best documented in well-studied Northern/Southern Resident populations; less certain elsewhere.
Carnivore, but diet varies markedly by ecotype: some populations eat almost only fish (e.g. Chinook salmon, herring), others specialise in marine mammals such as seals and even other cetaceans.
Highly social, living in stable, often matrilineal pods with population-specific vocal dialects and culturally transmitted hunting techniques.
Found in every ocean, from polar seas to the tropics, with notable concentrations in cold, productive waters.

Still found worldwide, with notable concentrations in cold, productive waters such as the North Pacific, North Atlantic and around Antarctica. Norwegian fjords host orcas following overwintering herring.

Fish-eating Resident populations are closely tied to Chinook salmon; declines in this prey are linked to poor body condition and low calf survival.
Mammal-hunting populations prey on seals, sea lions and other marine mammals, exerting top-down pressure on those populations.
